Secret

I feel awful, I have this secret, this fervent hope I keep silent. I dare not say what I am thinking as it is so unthinkable, so shameful. I've tried to come to terms, tried to surface from this place of dark yearning, but I am not strong enough. It grows so strong and fierce, the intensity of my desire threatening to eclipse all, making my every movement a struggle.

I know they'll say I'm crazy, that I'll regret saying it, but I don't believe it. Not a bit. And so, I suppose I might as well say it:

I want summer to be over. I want to wrap myself in autumn's embrace. I long for the crackle of back-to-school and Halloween longing. I catch flashes of red, renegade leaves turning before their time and my hear soars, a deep rumbling in my belly rises to the surface and the voracity of my hunger for the cooler air and quieter streets makes me tremble. I want to draw the curtains and nest. I want to chop potatoes and mince onions, I want to feel the hot, wet kiss of steam from a simmering pot of stew.

I dream of slipping little legs into bright woolen tights, tenderly twisting ringlets through the edges of hats. I want to giggle over the sight of our breath in the night, the street lights, tall and regal, illuminating our way as we tromp through piles of leaves or drifts of snow. I cannot wait to scamper into bed and burrow into the warmth of Sean's arms, to sleep side by side, touching the whole night through. Sigh.

I want summer to be over.

You're not crazy; I love fall too. Love to wear a sweater, jeans and boots. Love that I can wear my hair down without my neck sweating. Love that my face isn't perpetually slick and shiny. Love a fire burning in the living room while we devour bowls of warm apple crisp. Love it.

Hate the Canadian winter that follows, unfortunately.

I had that same secret. And when I revealed it to a friend, she chided me and told me to take it back! Michigan winters can be cruel but the months leading up to it are my favorite of all the seasons. I cannot wait to share hot cider and donuts with the girls and to nuzzle their new warm sweaters. Thanks to you, I can almost smell the crispness in the air!

Fall is my absolute favorite season.

Hands down.

The feeling, the smell, the sounds.

For whatever reason, it's always the season of new beginnings for me--perhaps a tie with starting school in the fall?

But I get it, completely.

Autumn here is SO short - about two months - and then it's winter for practically six months, so I really, REALLY begrudge its arrival while still liking the season itself.
I'm already looking forward to Christmas, though. Yay, Christmas!

A week ago in the middle of our hottest July ever, I would have agreed. All of a sudden the temperature dropped like a rock here and it feels like fall. I had to wear a sweater and long pants. I don't know anymore.

For two long years I suffered without seasons. It was always warm. Or Warmer.

Now ... Now I get Autumn and I can hardly wait. You are so not alone!

Me, too! Me, too!

I love the fall. I got married in the fall just because I love the crisp, coolness of it. It feels new. So much more so than spring, which always just feels soggy and cold.

Fall is wonderful.

Summer has its charm, for sure, but fall is so romantic, with its crisp apples, steel-gray skies, mulling spices, and logs in the fire. I love summer, I do. But fall holds a very special place in this girl's heart.
