Oh, my sweet baby, be still.
When Avery cried from the warming table, just moments after being born, it wasn't from shock or fear, it was simply that she wanted to do. To go. To feel wind in her hair and accomplishment in her belly. Every day since has been a sprint to mastery.

Running.

Climbing.

Getting her everything dirty working with Dad.
Last night in a run-of-the-mill, pre-bedtime romp with Bri, my sweet, strong, do-it-myself Ave fractured her tibia.
How will I ever keep her still enough to heal?***
*This isn't hypothetical people, lay some wisdom on me.
**Grandma may be coming to help!

Oh crap...poor Avery.
A friend of mine said when her busy boy was in a cast, she created a bar on his bed - no joke - so he could pull himself up on that and use half his body.
(He was always in motion. Still is.)
I know it will be rough. Please take care.

Poor poor poor baby girl.
Two winters ago, my Girl broke her arm - but she was old enough to understand that she had to be still. Lots of movies and lots of tv time, I guess, new colouring books and big fat boxes of crayons and dolls to dress.

Lots and lots of crayons. Maybe a bedside TV, one of those combo deals that can play DVDs or videos.
A fancy new bookshelf that's stocked with her favorites (and some cool "new" favorites) and is within arms reach.
One of those little claw, grabby things. Besides being fun to play with, they are versatile.
Then there's always medication . . .
This is gonna be a nightmare! I'd go bonkers. I can't imagine a kid . . .

I wish I had some wisdom for a kid! I was laid up for 6 weeks myself once. I vote for a beanbag lap desk for drawing and coloring and a basket of everything she could possible want to keep her busy within arms reach. And I suppose big sister Briar will need to be pressed into service entertaining her as well.
Oh my, what bad luck. Poor Avery - poor Mama!

Oh hell, that sucks. What kind of cast is she in?
June 15, 2008 11:56:00 AM PDT
Oh no!
Is she interested in any kind of craft at all that will keep her hands busy?

i have no wisdom, but a lot of sympathy. :(

bribery. All my parenting smarts go out the window when someone really needs help. (like I had any!)
I am so sorry and hope she is not in any pain!

I have nothing for you, but I do feel for Avery...and you! I can't even imagine keeping an active child still! Good luck!

Oh Amanda, my thoughts are with little Avery. Hang in there!

When my grandaughter, also Avery, broke her arm one summer the best thing we found was a rubber glove that slipped over her cast. You squeezed the bulb and it created a waterproof seal. She could get wet, which made all the difference in the world. Maybe they make one for leg casts . Other than that, give up all preconceived notions of not spoiling your child. Bribery and a lot of time out of the house help.

I can't get my toddler to be still for diaper changes or anything, really, so I have no good advice just, as other have written, some sympathy and wishes for good luck!

Oh NO! Poor thing -- and poor mommy!
Things that keep her hands busy, so at least she feels a bit more active? Rig her up a skateboard she can sit on? (Not sure if I am kidding or not on that last one ... )
