Seven days until Briar’s birthday.
There is so much to live up to, and yet, I fear it’s all my own stuff. Briar will be fine with pink streamers, a pink cake and some things to unwrap. And she’ll have more, I am imaginative and energetic, willing to hang from trees or paint my nose, these have never been my problems.
This is about me. It’s not a great feeling, a little like the obnoxious parents screaming from the bleachers, demanding that the coaches take a kid out. This is about yearning. Wanting to belong and wanting to have. It’s about the cake not falling and the sky not clouding. It’s wishing for perfection and missing, that by taking a deep breath I’d see, that perfection stands before me, waiting with open arms.
This week I’ll go and I’ll buy princess accoutrements, I’ll order the frothy pink cake and I’ll knock on the doors of our neighbors.
This week I’ll breathe deep and see perfection and when the time comes I’ll look into the eyes of my sweet baby and see the dazzling reflection of candles and joy.
*Updated to add that I still welcome all birthday ingenuity you care to share.
Of course you will.
Happy Birthday to the sweet girl with the beautiful curls and appreciation for crushed clover.
Happy Early Birthday, beautiful Briar.
Tiaras – it's all about tiaras!
You make all of her days special, you will do the same for her birthday.
Can't wait for pictures!
Whatever you do… Briar will love it. It's all about the cake (well… and the unwrapping too!) The big hit at Zoe's birthday party… a bubble machine. It was about $15. It ran all day. Great purchase.
One of the latent reasons I stopped blogging over the summer was for fear of having to come up with one of the requisite Mom Blog stunners – the ode to the birthday child. Too much pressure to declare the obvious adoration we have for our progeny in fresh and interesting ways.
It's her day and, luckily the little ones are easily pleased. Great big sighs and happy b-day to Briar!
Get those sugar cookies in the rolls and buy a TON of different sprinkles and colored sugar and frosting and let the girls decorate them.
They love that stuff
i love that picture, A.
you'll plan a wonderful party, i have no doubt, because you'll be planning it with so much love. i know everyone will have a great time.
My sisters and I had theme parties when we were younger, I think our 6th birthday was the princess party. My mom went to the dollar store and bought "gems" and hid them in the yard, it was a egg hunt-esque activity, but clearly made a good impression. I mean who doesn't want to find diamonds in the grass?! Just a thought š
ooohhh… I have just been thinking that I need to get on with my own bit of birthday planning around here. Beautiful post.
Sorry, but screw your neighbors. Do you have to invite them?
That said, happy soon to be bday!
Mike
Even if it rains…the it will be sunny because Brir is there. This is a sweet time.
Happy Birthday, Briar! And Happy Mommy-versary to you too š
Happy Birthday to your sweet girl! No matter what is planned she will love it. Enjoy the day:)
You just want the best for her. That's beautiful. Enjoy her special day! You know she will. Birthday blessings….
Similar to flutter's suggestion — I've done ice cream sundaes, with chocolate or vanilla and toppings for the kids to add themselves (or with a little help). I've also done cupcakes — it's such a little thing, but the kids love it!
Happy b-day, Briar, by the way! The way your mom writes, I'm sure it will be lovely!
A princess party cries out for Pin-The-Tiara-On-The-Princess, and princess freeze dance. Oh, and Sleeping Princesses, the best birthday party game EVER.
Have fun. What a lovely girl.
Oh! Princess Freeze Dance is regular old freeze dance – you put on some music, the kids dance and at irregular intervals you turn off the music, which causes the princesses to freeze in position. Anyone caught moving can either be taken out of the game – to help you catch other movers – or can keep dancing. The last person dancing is the winner. You make it princessy by playing princess music, you see.
Oh, I suffer from these pangs too. Where I live the kids' birthdays cost as much as my wedding ran me and I just can't compete. I know my girls aren't judging and comparing, they just want to be the center of US. But I judge, and compare, and fall short every year!
I wish you both your own special Birthday Magic!
