HUDSON FALLS — Betty L. Cornell, 96, of Coleman Avenue, passed away Thursday, May 31, 2012, surrounded by her friends Jan Magee and Jeannie Chrabaszcz, with whom she resided the last four months, and her lifelong friend, Doris Harrington.

Born April 28, 1916, in Chicago, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Emma (Gitsham) Cornell.

Betty was a graduate of Hudson Falls High School. She received her bachelor’s degree from Ithaca College in 1938and her master’s degree from New York University.

Betty taught physical education in Dansville, South Glens Falls and Glens Falls, retiring after 28 years of teaching.

She served with the American Red Cross in the European Theatre from 1943 until 1946. When she was in England, Betty was the recreational director for the 390 Bomb group. While in Europe, she was with the Red Cross Club Mobil Unit to the 9th Army.

Betty was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Hudson Falls.

One of her greatest enjoyments was playing golf and her affiliation with the Oueensbury Country Club. In 1988, the staff changed the name of the women’s Ladies Day to the Betty Cornell Day, to thank Betty for establishing the spirit of love and welcoming friendship that she personified at the Queensbury Country Club. An excellent golfer, Betty was club champion 15 times.

She was predeceased by her sister, Helen Cornell, three brothers, William Cornell, George Cornell, and Richard Cornell and her sisters-in- law, Ruth Cornell and Helen Cornell.

Survivors include her niece, Judy McFarland of Glendale, Wis.; her great-niece, Colleen Rademaker and her husband, Robert, of Goshen, Ind.; her great-nephew, Kevin McFarland-Porter and his wife, Theresa, of Rochester, and their children, David, Ross and Elizabeth; and several cousins and friends.

A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 9, 2012, at First Presbyterian Church, 5 River St., Hudson Falls, with the Rev. Michael Plank, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family at Union Cemetery in the town of Fort Edward.

Betty’s family suggests memorial donations be made to the Queensbury Country Club Scholarship Fund, 907 state Route 149, Lake George, NY 12845.
