Broken Plug

Posted on May 14, 2013

The concept of unplugging is a thing of beauty. Set aside the phone, close the laptop, hide the remote, and give yourself completely to the three dimensional. The pressure to unplug and the judgement of not doing so has become an oppressive blanket. The divide between those of us who use the online realm for work and those who don’t is a rapidly growing chasm. Essays on “That mom at the playground” abound. Luckily, of all the things I take to heart and struggle to overcome, this kind of judgement isn’t one of them. I want to unplug. I set my phone to silent and tuck it beneath the lamp in my bedroom. The tv isn’t an issue, it holds no real draw. Laptop,…

I Said It

Lest anyone think that I am always positive, always overflowing with patience and calm, may I demonstrate that in addition to running a tender post I wrote about bedtime, the Huffington Post also shared a not so sentimental moment that I experienced: So as we all slog through another Monday, maybe you started yours with an emergency trip to the dentist for your child like I did (which let me tell you, there is nothing that brings the sense of failure as a parent to the surface as a toothache and , “Hmm, looks like you haven’t been here in almost a year,” tsk tsk tsk from the dental hygienist) or maybe you were desperately trying to wrangle a snack for pre-k that fell…

When I met Sean I told him that I wasn’t looking to make friends, he told me he wasn’t asking me to marry him. It wasn’t the last time that I would be faced with something that I hadn’t quite thought all the way through. Eventually he did ask me to marry him and I said yes without hesitation. We talked about having kids and celebrated in disbelief when we saw the first pink line. We had no idea how much life would change or how much we would change. I still have a chip on my shoulder, but it doesn’t prevent me from loving the way that it did the summer we met. He is still a romantic, but the years have hardened…

Over

Lately it feels like I have been overbooked, overtired, and completely overwhelmed. I’ve been deliberate about carving out time where there is no phone, no computer, no timelines, just a daughter and me. I don’t say this to make anyone feel a certain way about me—I am not looking to participate in arguments about how we parent or how we do or don’t climb the corporate ladder. I am saying aloud for the benefit of myself that this one thing I wanted to accomplish, these snippets of alone time with each daughter, have happened. I did close out everything but the cadence in Ave’s reading, the lilt in Fin’s voice as she sang a new song, the quirky sound that Briar makes before she…

Lights Up

Sean and I met at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. It was not a simple courtship (are any?), but very little is simple when you’re working in summer stock and have the relentless deadlines and pervasive spirit of temporariness. Eventually though, we made it past the distractions and the monumental chip on my shoulder to discover that we worked very well together. Four years later we got married just outside of Saratoga Springs, New York. We kept a connection to theatre through work we did for the Adirondack Theatre Festival. When we had our daughters, one of whom we gave the middle name Adams after the theater in Williamstown, we made a promise that we would expose them to music and the arts. Our hope…
